Facebook Q4 earnings in 2014

Let’s start with a quick round up of 2014.

As most people predicted, Facebook’s Q4 earnings broke company records and surpassed the estimates suggested by Wall Street experts. The company turned over $3.85 billion in revenue which was 1.6% higher than analyst predictions, with a 100% year on year growth from mobile ads ($2.49 billion).

The biggest driver of revenue was mobile advertising with reports showing mobile app installs being the key contributor to their best ever quarter. With the money trail leading to the mobile market space, is this a sign for businesses to adjust their marketing strategies to focus more towards mobile marketing?

Facebook have purchased several major mobile apps in the past few years and mentioned plans on creating further mobile apps based around Facebook. Mobile apps should look like a highly viable option for businesses who have yet to create one or have not used the Facebook platform to promote and push their app.

Facebook’s acquisitions

Since 2005, Facebook has acquired more than 40 different companies. We won’t mention them all but the biggest ones were:

Whatsapp – Facebook bought out the world’s most popular messaging app for a staggering $16 billion. Facebook said the purchase would stimulate growth for both Facebook and Whatsapp. While Facebook remains the #1 most visited website in the world, in emerging markets such as India and Brazil statistics show that more people are using Whatsapp than Facebook.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that there are no plans to merge both companies together.

Instagram – Is another app primarily used on mobile devices and was bought out by Facebook in 2012 for $1 billion. The app has over 1 billion monthly users and was the 9th most downloaded app in 2014. We saw the dedicated Facebook Messenger app released in 2014, we have a feeling there will be a simliar one coming out for images very soon too.

Oculus VR – Unless you’re a geek (like me) you may not have heard of Facebook’s acquisition of Oculus VR. Oculus VR develop wearable technology that send users into virtual reality. It has the ability for you to enjoy court side seats at a basketball game, be worn to study inside an actual classroom or to meet your doctor all from the comfort of your home.

Karma – No we are not going all spiritual on you, but rather discussing Facebook’s buyout of Karma, the gift-giving mobile app which they paid $80 million for in May 2012.

This was one venture that Facebook could not turn into a success. They started with selling gift cards on their site but failed to gain any real momentum. In 2012, Facebook launched Facebook Gifts but closed operations early in 2014 as it failed to be a hit with users.

This was the first time Facebook decided to do the selling instead of letting others use their platform to advertise.

The majority of Facebook’s buyouts were mobile app startups or ventures that related to mobile or wearable services. Is this just coincidence or are we heading to a mobile future?

What is the Blue Giant saying?

In a New York Times interview, Zuckerberg said they plan on “Unbundling the Big Blue app”. He stated while Facebook started off as a website based platform, it has really come to life on mobile devices with“Ease of access being important” for mobile users.

Facebook will be taking the Creative Labs approach to their platform. They plan to start segmenting certain areas of Facebook into their own unique apps to provide a world-class experience. Whereas before using the Facebook app you could instant message friends, today users are presented with a dedicated Facebook Messenger app that provides a more crisp and effective user experience.

Roomers suggest that this was one of the reasons for acquiring Instagram and Whatsapp to perform a collaboration in the future.

Where we think Facebook is heading

While nobody can predict the future one thing is for sure – Facebook isn’t going anywhere. With record profits in Q4 thanks to mobile advertising, without sounding like Captain Obvious we expect the brand to invest more on the mobile side of commutation.

Wearable technology is in its teething phase of development and it will be interesting to see which route Facebook take with Oculus VR. Not only that but if they have plans to buyout further wearable app companies in 2015.

Acquiring Karma was the first step Facebook took into directly selling to their users and it ended up failing pretty badly. In 2015 we expect to see Facebook doing what they do best: helping businesses just like you to promote and sell to Facebook’s users, rather than being the ones that do the selling.

What leads us to believe this? Well in July 2014, Facebook began testing their new ‘Buy’ call-to-action which would allow users to directly purchase products and services without leaving Facebook.

Summary

2015 is going to be an exciting time for everyone. Facebook has already reported it will be releasing various new apps as a part of their unbundling strategy. With all signs pointing towards a mobile future, maybe it’s only a matter of time before we see the first Facebook mobile or tablet?
