Do you want to engage better with your followers on Facebook? What a silly question – of course you do.

It should come as no surprise the type of Facebook updates you post, how you post and format are all factors that relate directly to overall viewer engagement.

In this article we will show you 6 super-effective ways of optimizing every aspect of posting updates on your Facebook Page, to gain maximum exposure and blockbuster results.

Upload correctly sized images

As we all know images help engage with followers better than plain-text, so you’re probably (or you should be) posting a lot of pictures on your page. But did you know that Facebook crop all images to 504 x 504 pixels if you’re uploading a single picture?

At the very least your images should be 1200 x 628 pixels in size so when they are cropped they are shown clearly and not distorted or stretched. Many suggest going with images of 1200 x 1200 pixels to ensure the best results.

A picture that is distorted or pixelated will tarnish your brand’s social image and the post itself.

Pro-tip: Check out Canva who allow you to create your own images, they also have sizes which are optimal for Facebook Cover photos and Facebook Posts.

How to format your Facebook Posts

Facebook offers you two ways in sharing links, the first is to upload a picture, write a piece of text and manually enter the URL. The second way is to paste the URL link and let Facebook populate its own picture and copy from the URL of the page itself. This is also known as ‘link-formatting’.

Manually entering your Facebook updates generally fail to give your links any sort of context without entering text yourself. Essentially your Facebook post is two separate entities: The image/text and the URL link.

Simply pasting the URL into the update box will automatically populate a picture, title, text from the page itself and a link that redirects your followers when clicked. For example:

Does it make a difference in engagement?
Hell yes!

Facebook have been researching on how links are being shared and revealed that posts which use link-formatting have higher likes because they provide users with greater information. Link-format updates are given higher weight in the Facebook algorithm resulting in your posts generating a greater organic reach.

Pro-tip: After you past the URL link into the Facebook update, you can remove the link and just write a small comment to introduce the link. Like the example above.

Target your audience

Only this month Facebook have rolled out two new targeting options when creating posts on your page, they are Interest and Post End Date.

How to use Interests – Let’s say for example your next post is relating to Valentine’s Day, you can use Interests to target followers who are only in relationships.

You will be able to single out a particular group of followers who value the content, without annoying others on your list who receive little to no value (singles).

If you’re a business who has several customer demographics, using Interests allows you to target specific groups on your page. This is the Facebook version of email segmentation.

How to use Post End Date – Ideally suited for special promotions, sales and getting the word out for your next event. You set a date for how long you want the post to be shown, and once the date passes, it will not be shown on anyone’s feed again.

Have a call-to-action

Facebook users have their finger on the scroll button and you need to give them a good reason to stop scrolling. You have to tell them what to do – that’s where the call-to-action comes in.

Facebook Pages now offer you a call-to-action button which allows followers to book your services directly using Facebook.

It’s free to use and gives consumers another way to purchase.

Get your timing down

Posting at 11pm when your audience is off to bed is not going to give you the engagement you want. So when is the best time to post? Well don’t ask me – check your Facebook Insights to see which hours of the day your fans are logging into Facebook.

Click on Facebook Insights which is located on your fan page, then click on the Post tab to see when the bulk of your followers access Facebook.

The example below is of a location dependent business, most of their fans login around 7am and traffic seems to drop after 10pm. This is pretty normal as most get up and go to work around that time and start hitting the sack around 10pm.

Posting around 10am-2pm would be ideal in this case.

Facebook Insight

The second set of results are from an online business with fans all over the world. Posting at a set time wouldn’t have too much of an influence but not everyone will see the updates.

insights 2

This is where a lot of online businesses trip over online, as they decide to recycle their content.

For example, they post update A at 9am and update B at 10pm, then a few days later they post update B at 9am and update A at 10pm. While this sounds like a great way to maximize reach for the business in the second example, they may end up spamming their followers with recycled content and Facebook really doesn’t like this either.

Pro-tip: If your businesses caters to a worldwide audience and there’s not a single most effective time to post, you can maximize results by boosting your posts with Facebook Ads.

It doesn’t cost a lot and you can target only fans who liked your page to ensure every follower sees each update you post.

Promote less and give more

Facebook have already stated they are clamping down on self-promotional posts in 2015 (unless they are paid ads), so keep sticking to the 80/20 rule that we advise in most of our articles.

Content is king and the best content will always receive the greatest engagement, find out what your followers want and shove it down their throats… well not shove, but you get what I mean.

If your content continuously receives poor exchange the Facebook algorithm reduce the reach of your future posts because nobody wants to see them.
