If your businesses’ Facebook Page is failing you seriously need to read what I have to say. In 2015, any reputable business must have a highly active Facebook Page that is receiving hundreds if not thousands (depending on amount of followers) of interactions each day.

In this article I am going to address the common faults most businesses are making which are stopping them for breaking the glass ceiling.

1. They don’t want to open up their wallets

The biggest trait of businesses who fail on Facebook is due to their budget, or rather a lack of one. We are no longer in 1995 where competitors were sparse and you had the lion’s share of the market.

We are in a very competitive marketplace and businesses who don’t allocate a sensible budget towards Facebook advertising are the ones losing out.

Numerous studies have shown that Facebook is indeed one of the cheapest and most effective online advertising mediums today. So don’t be scared to open up your wallet, it will cost a lot less than you think.

2. Businesses are too stiff and well…boring

Facebook is a social media platform, a place to interact and ultimately have fun by sharing joyous life moments. Some stubborn businesses refuse to acknowledge the changes in business culture today and think that they need to remain professional all the time.

Businesses who can’t change gears to portray a number of different personalities are going to be stuck in neutral using Facebook. Your customers are using Facebook to interact and socialize, not to discuss business and be rigged.

Businesses who can’t take of their ties and undo their top collar button usually tank on social media.

3. A newbie is running is the page

Having a personal Facebook profile is straightforward and can be managed by anyone. Hell, even my parents know their way around Facebook. But a Facebook profile and a Facebook Page are two different beasts all together.

You don’t measure social ROI on your Facebook profile when you post an update or upload some pictures, why would you?

However, businesses who think managing a Facebook Page is just like running a personal profile are holding the wrong end of the stick. The only similarities between the two is that they are both easy to use – the similarities stop there.

An inexperienced individual who runs a Facebook Page is only going to cost your business money and possibly undo branding efforts. Just take a look at our three part series to crafting the perfect Facebook ad to see how difficult it truly is.

4. Businesses don’t understand the Internet

Internet has been the birthplace for some funny, wacky and weird things. My favorite being the meme. Some businesses are so out of touch with the Internet it shows in every Facebook update they make.

The Internet is not a board meeting, it’s a place where people (your customers) come to be entertained, have fun and relax. Do you remember a few months ago when news about the new Apple iPhone 6 was believed to bend in users’ pockets?

Here’s what Samsung posted on Facebook and Twitter:

Not only is the ad funny, but they received thousands of likes and greatly improved Samsung’s brand image.

Pro-tip: Don’t be a square and watch your reach grow.

5. They don’t have a Facebook marketing plan

It simply isn’t enough to quickly create a Facebook Page, upload a few pictures and update it whenever you have free time. Businesses who do this may as well not bother with creating a Facebook Page, as this can reflect negativity for your online presence.

From personal experience I know some marketing departments create updates on the spot to post on their page, this never ends well. As with any part of business, you need a plan else expect to fail.

Businesses need to layout what they want to achieve from Facebook and then create a Facebook marketing strategy around it.

Take Hyundai as an example, they created a Facebook marketing plan that aimed to reach consumers who were in the market to buy either a compact or mid-size vehicle. With a rock solid Facebook marketing plan they sold 2.1x more cars to their targeted audience and the overall campaign gave them a 55% lower cost per conversion than any other method.

This just goes to show what US businesses can do when they take Facebook seriously.

The bottom line

Any major business who is failing with Facebook in today’s competitive business world are going to damage their brand’s image, lose out to competitors and may even become obsolete in the near future. Don’t be that business.
