While setting up a Facebook Page seems rather simple, the choices you make along the way have a huge impact on how your Page will perform. A small mistake such as selecting the wrong category can limit your Page features, while forgetting to fill out the about us section could lose you customers.

In today’s article, I will show you how to create a Facebook Business Page the right way.

1. Picking the right category

Your first major decision is to choose a category for your Facebook Business Page. You have 6 options, they are:

Facebook Business Page

Each category provides different features:

Which category to choose for your business? Ask yourself which of the following best suit your business:

Local Business or Place – Perfect for businesses that have a physical presence and an address. This category will allow Facebook users to leave reviews and check-in at your shop or store. If you manage two or more stores you can create two separate Pages.

Company, Organization or Institution – Suited for businesses who aren’t dependent of a physical location (online businesses). This category is also favored by businesses who want to enable check-in features but not allow customers to leave reviews.

Brand or Product – Do you sell your product or service via a variety of mediums or on a website? Brand or Product is ideally suited if your business has a core product (think Apple iPhone, Playstation 4 or Mailchimp).

Artist, Band or Public Figure – Best for individuals, for example, if you wish to use Facebook to market your services instead of using a regular Facebook profile, this category is for you.

Entertainment – Ideal if your business is related to sports, selling books, newspapers, magazines, movies or anything else in the entertainment industry.

Cause or Community – If you feel your business do not match up with any of the above, select this category.

Sometimes a single category is not enough. Maybe you have a physical presence but also sell several core products that receive major attention – what then? Create more than one Facebook Page for your business. There’s no rule on how many pages you can create.

For example, Samsung have several different pages based on country and products:

Facebook allows you to change your category as many times as you wish, so don’t worry too much if your business changes later on.

2. Adding your details

Depending on the category you have chosen, you will be asked to fill in your company details. For the Local Business or Place category you will need to validate your address.

When filling in your details make sure it matches all other online accounts (Google Plus, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.) If you selected the Local Business or Place option, it’s very important to have your business located on the map so prospects know exactly where you are. Most won’t bother manually searching for you on Google Maps.

Your profile picture needs to be 180 x 180 pixels wide and I suggest using the same image on all other social media accounts to keep branding consistent.

Be sure to add your page your Favorites so it’s easy to access later:

3. Edit your Page

As soon as you get to this point your Facebook Business Page will be looking like this:

Your Facebook Business Page is now viewable by everyone, but you can keep it private until you finish editing, head to: Settings > Page Visibility > Unpublish Page.

Picture 7

If you have someone else to managing your Facebook Business Page or aspects of it, you can add them by going to Settings > Page Roles and add other Facebook users to your Page. They must first like your Facebook Business Page before you can give them access to your Business Page.

Facebook has 5 roles and they provide the following functionality:

From the Settings Page you can also define your target audience which helps when promoting on Facebook, link mobile apps and set Page notifications.

4. Selecting a killer cover photo

A few months ago I mentioned how useful Canva is to finding quality images. They recently added several new Facebook cover photos that fit perfectly within the dimensions.

They offer several free pictures and paid images starting from just $1. If you don’t find anything you like, hire a freelancer to create a bespoke design. While it may seem irreverent to have a cover photo, it’s actually very important. Mashable stated 50% of consumers value a Facebook Page more than a company website, while another 82% feel it’s a great way to interact with brands.

5. About us

Probably one of the most important aspects of your Facebook Business Page that most overlook. The information you type here is what helps you rank on Google, and gives prospects more ways to reach you.

Fill out all relevant areas and make sure to have your website URL, name, address (if applicable) , phone number and the short description filled in. Don’t get lazy, fill in every relevant section, interested prospects will head to your about us section to find out more. Spending an extra 10 minutes filling everything in correctly can be the difference between making a sale or losing a prospect.

6. Place a call-to-action

Late in 2014, Facebook rolled out their call-to-action button which places a small button on the top of your Facebook Business Page. Facebook’s call-to-action allows you to select the following options:

Picture 10

Select the option most appropriate for your business and direct a link back to your website. For example, if your website sells products the ‘Shop Now’ would be better suited, if you sell a SaaS product then ‘Sign Up’ is more relevant.

Here’s the Moz Facebook Page where they have used a Sign Up call-to-action that leads prospects to the 30 day free trial of their SaaS:

Should you be using Facebook apps?

While you recognize the advantages of having a Facebook Business Page or group, do know the benefits of Facebook apps? Determine your goals in relation to creating your Page, and whether Facebook apps can play a part in reaching them.

There are hundreds of useful Facebook apps that provide greater functionality for your Page. For example, the LiveChat app is a great way for customers to receive support over sending emails or phoning in. There are apps for literally everything from hosting Facebook competitions, setting up eStores to playing games.

Summary

That’s the nuts and bolts to setting up a detailed Facebook Business Page. Don’t rush the process, take your time and select the best options that will improve your business’s Facebook marketing strategy.
